As Love Hina kicks into the third DVD release, it's just as weird as ever, and the hijinks are just as crazy as they were before. Released by Bandai Entertainment, the DVD includes four episodes as well a few extras. Among these is an interview with the director Yoshiaki Iwasaki. Normally, this would be a very helpful and exciting extra. In the format that Bandai put it in, however, the tiny pearls of wisdom that could be garnered from watching it aren't even worth half the time watching it. The interview features an annoyingly condescending female voice over that makes it seem like a children's documentary. In the background is the animated head of the director talking, accompanied by dubbed clips. Overall, the format of the interview is very colorful, highly tacky, and painfully gaudy, making the viewing experience only tolerable for any brief insights he might have on the characters. Another extra is the character photo gallery which, although small, is fun to look at. Another bit of packaging fun comes with the DVD insert and cover, the former featuring a fold-out “guide” to Shinobu, and the latter being reversible to reveal shots of Naru as a pop idol.

ADV Manga appears to have abandoned the larger format of their Azumanga Daioh and Full Metal Panic! manga releases, switching to the now-industry-standard sized volumes for Tactics and other current titles. It's a shame that the artwork has to be squeezed to a smaller size, but it's still readable, and they get bonus points for keeping the original Japanese cover on this one.

Japanese folklore and legends have a habit of turning interesting manga and anime ideas into plodding history lessons. The first volume of Tactics, however, decides to sacrifice cultural accuracy in favor of lighthearted laughs and appealing characters. Haruka may be way too handsome to be a traditional goblin, and the storytelling may need some work, but the character interactions and artwork make this manga a pleasant read. It's probably worth sticking around to see the further adventures of Kantaro and the gang.

Japanese culture pundits will probably have some nitpicks with ADV Manga's translation of Tactics. In dealing with Japanese folklore, words like youkai, tengu and oni lack a true English equivalent since these creatures don't exist in Western folklore. While some translators insist on preserving the original Japanese terms, ADV chooses to approximate them words like goblin and demon, making the manga more accessible to readers who aren't well-versed in Japanese culture. Nitpicking aside, the translated dialogue runs smoothly and is free of typos. More notably, every bit of Japanese text
(not just sound effects) that is printed on artwork or screentone -- i.e. anything not directly on a white background -- is preserved, with a translation added right next to it. If you ever wanted to learn how to read Japanese, Tactics has the makings of a beginning phrasebook. (Well, not really, but seeing entire sentences in Japanese AND translated is relatively new in domestic manga.)

Despite the failings of the story, however, Tactics does have an appealing core of characters. Kantaro may be a noble-minded crusader for human-goblin relations, but he's also full of quirks: he's shamelessly materialistic, the folklore articles for his publisher are never on time, and he doesn't always explain his motives when he gets Haruka involved in his adventures. The supporting cast is just as amusing. There's Yoko, the resident kitsune (fox-spirit) and housekeeper who keeps Kantaro in check -- at least when she's not fantasizing about making Haruka a male gigolo. Haruka, of course, behaves exactly as you might expect a near-omnipotent creature to behave. When asked to fight a demon right after being released from the seal, Haruka lets his new master know: "I'm not what you'd call a morning goblin." It's interchanges like these that make Kantaro and Haruka's relationship more fun than the usual hero-and-sidekick fare. Sure, Kantaro's the boss, but Haruka clearly follows his own agenda (often centered around his personal rice bowl).

Sakura Kinoshita brings these characters to life with the same polished visual style that she used in Matantei Loki Ragnarok. Kantaro, with his wide eyes and slightly ruffled hair, is an adorable young male lead; Yoko is a cute girl who's even cuter as a fox mascot, and Haruka is the very model of a modern bishounen. (Somewhere, someone is already producing a doujinshi about Kantaro and Haruka's "relationship"...) The artwork sits on the elegant and cutesy side of adventure/fantasy manga without falling into swishy shoujo clichés, and it switches effortlessly into a comedic, exaggerated style when things get funny. However, the action sequences lack a dynamic quality: more than once, Kinoshita tries to imply a big motion using speedlines and a striking pose, when it would be more exciting to portray the motion itself. We already know that Kinoshita is a talented illustrator, but if she could render action more effectively, then her artwork would really be top-notch.

Those familiar with Sakura Kinoshita's Matantei Loki Ragnarok could easily accuse her of recycling her character designs in Tactics. Kantaro is practically a clone of Loki, and Haruka is a slightly modified Yamino. However, writer Kazuko Higashiyama provides a story that sets Tactics firmly in the Japanese mythos rather than the Norse one. Those with an interest in Japanese folklore and Eastern sorcery will find their niche in this manga.

Volume 1 presents three tales of Kantaro's goblin-hunting adventures. The first story, which involves an exorcism at a rural shrine, is where Kantaro meets Haruka for the first time. This is the only major plot point in the book; the second story is about Kantaro investigating a shady "goblin circus" and the third is about a newly founded cult that mistakes him for a prophet. There's no need to worry about plot complexity in this series yet, since the story pattern follows the well-tested formula of a gifted individual solving people's problems in an episodic manner. Even so, these short stories stumble in their pacing -- a scene that logically seems to be leading somewhere will suddenly be cut short, or have no resolution. With this first volume, it looks like Kinoshita and Higashiyama are still trying to find their chemistry as a storytelling team. The real gems in Tactics are individual scenes and gags, but when it comes to having a cohesive story, Kinoshita doesn't always seem sure about what she's supposed to draw.

The series has, by the way, a fantastic full-bodied score by Sōhei Kano and an equally superb opening (an atmospheric vocal number set to morphing fractals) and ending (a beautiful rendition of Yeats' "Down By the Salley Gardens"). Which helps, but hardly redeems anything.

In truth Fractale's story and its central idea aren't as independent as I make them out to be. Just as it is bedecked with unfinished plot threads and characters, so too is Fractale full of half-formed ideas and unanswered questions. As it plods carelessly through its middle and dashes heedlessly to its end the show never bothers to take its ideas anywhere truly interesting, never allows them to cross that line from intriguing to revelatory...or meaningful, or anything else that great science fiction and great science fiction ideas are supposed to be. And that's the series' true shame.

Yamamoto's studio Ordet and A-1 Pictures Inc. maintain a fairly impressive level of artistry for most of the series. There's the inevitable slide in quality after the cleanly animated first episodes, with their pleasingly-rendered body movements and swarming doppel-markets, but on a whole the series remains quite beautiful. Sometimes it'll soak in the pastoral bliss of the open countryside, at others it'll warm you with Nessa's carefully-animated cuteness or take your breath away with the fantastical wonders of a "perfect" Fractale city. More instructive, however, are the times when Yamamoto and his crew slip up. Some slips are subtle and understandable—the overall loss of detail and movement in Clain and his compadres' faces, say—but some are blatant pokes in the eye. There are times when characters go completely off model, when lines get sloppy and movements grow ugly, when faces and bodies move in stiff and unnatural ways that are hideously at odds with the overall superiority of the animation. Even more than Yamamoto's obvious discomfort with the bloody action, those lapses in discipline speak of a growing gap between director and content, of a director grown dissatisfied, even jaded, with his creation. Which goes a long ways towards explaining why the show can't pull itself together.

Funimation's English adaptation is typically solid. The overwhelmingly female cast manages the seemingly impossible task of turning in distinctive performances for each of the countless students, despite the necessity in many cases of performing multiple parts. Luci Christian's Asuna, with her relatively wide range of emotions, is a standout, while Christopher R. Sabat's narrator is a shamelessly hammy blast. Greg Ayres is one of the few male voice talents capable of convincingly playing a character of Negi's age and temperament. His English accent is a tad shaky and he sometimes lets his voice drop into a scratchy whisper, but he more than compensates with his balanced intensity during action sequences. The script is surprisingly tight, taking its most serious liberties when adjusting for culture-specific gags. The result is smooth, funny, and on occasion, ingenious (check out the extended Dr. Seuss gag in episode eight). The decision to dub the opening and closing themes was not one of those occasions.

Negima!?'s opening features some unusually complex animation, so the chance to enjoy it sans credits is welcome. Also provided is a clean version of the mildly obnoxious candy-pop closing and its parade of SD characters, which also serves as a convenient catalogue of each character's assigned character trait. The only other extra of note is a lengthy series of cultural notes explaining the on-screen text (which is filled with geek-culture in-jokes).

Though few will find Negima!? to be anything but inconsequential, it does feel rather cruel to abuse the series for it. As acquired a taste as Akiyuki Shinbo's sense of humor is, and as microscopic as its ambitions are, the series is still funny, fun and basically harmless (though there is something vaguely dirty about the loving care with which each of Negi's kisses is animated). There are worse things to be than silly eye-candy, and worse transgressions to be accused of than inconsequentiality. Of course, there are better things to be as well.

Now if only Shinbo and his regular collaborators at SHAFT put half as much enthusiasm into the plot. The series drifts from one magical confrontation to the next through a series of clumsy character-building episodes, displaying neither the drive nor the sweet sentimentality of the original. Little effort is taken to beef up Akamatsu's vast cast of single-trait characters, and the premise itself—which begins with a ready-made harem of thirty one and is spearheaded by a lead who is not only under-aged, but also a teacher and a wizard—could use some overhauling that Shinbo seems most unwilling to supply.

Of course, Shinbo's no babe in the woods (in fact he's one of the more anime-savvy directors currently active). He knows the limitations of his story and makes what he can of them. Kazuhiro Ota's gorgeous designs combine with carefully animated body language to flesh out the underwritten female roles, creating for each a unique, purely visual charm. The hypnotic visuals and strange humor are ever on hand to prop the series up when its dramatic content fails—which is often—and Negi's innate decency is allowed to overpower his blandness when at all possible. But ultimately Shinbo is more interested in indulging his many visual obsessions than in transcending the series' silly premise or one-note characters.

Composer Kazuhiro Ota's score is at its best when keeping Negima!? fluffy despite the often alienating effects of Shinbo's oblique editing and stylistic excess. It does so with bouncy bubblegum vocals and mindlessly upbeat ditties that have an odd way of growing on you with repeated use. The score is also capable of the darker, harder sounds needed to support supernatural action, but fares poorly in comparison to the expressionistic panache of the visuals.

Though billed as Season 2, Negima!? isn't a sequel to Negima! so much as it is a complete re-imagining. Negima!? takes Ken Akamatsu's magical action-romance and bends it so ruthlessly to director Akiyuki Shinbo's will that it's ends up more Pani Poni Dash! than Love Hina. Enjoyment of the series will hinge not only on one's affection for the franchise but also on one's tolerance for Shinbo's visual experimentation and postmodern humor. The new Negima is drenched with anime in-jokes and bizarre nonsequiturs. It's short on overt romance, heavy on inventive magical warfare, and liberal with its fan-service, delivering it with an acuity that is almost unsettling. The result is sometimes funny (particularly when exploiting the running chupacabra jokes or Chamo's bad luck with roses), often merely weird, and always fascinating to look at. But rarely does it bear more than a passing resemblance to Nobuyoshi Habara's original take on the material.

As with his other works, Shinbo's Negima is most remarkable for his idiosyncratic visuals. One of anime's most distinctive visual stylists, Shinbo's works are immediately identifiable by their purposefully disorienting gothic-noir look. Though lightened by a decidedly brighter palette and tone than, say MoonPhase, Negima!? is no exception. Actions are transformed into abstract tableaux by purple shadows, colored light and expressionistically posed bodies. Wind-blown hair flows in art-deco curlicues, images lose focus and strange, distorted camera angles turn everyday settings into suffocating alien prisons. The action set-pieces are outrageously baroque, the first and best of them an aerial battle fought amongst the frozen pillars of a gargantuan ice sculpture of Evangeline. Cutaway sets, strange, random animals and inexplicably bad wardrobe choices (that chupacabra shirt!) provide humorous counterpoints to the darker visuals.

On a different note, it is also good to see that the DVD extras which have been included in every volume continue to be at good, robust levels. English voice actor interviews and recording sessions are regulars along with extra art and audio commentaries. The consistency in the quality and quantity of the extra content is pleasing as it provides value for money and gives insight into the other side of the camera.

Without giving too much away, it is now very obvious that the pen is mightier than the sword. Death Note is now well and truly on its way to revealing all that fans have been waiting for. While still somewhat distant to what will no doubt be its prime, perhaps in the next installment there will be something never before seen in the story thus far. Maybe Soichiro Yagami will catch L eating something savory. Whatever the case at least one viewer wants to see what happens next.

The original tension from the Light-versus-L days is barely detectable as L concedes that Light is not the Kira they are now looking for. That said, the underlying truth (the fact that Light is the real Kira) indirectly creates interest by keeping the tension on a simmer. Viewers are engaged by the fact that there is a metaphoric dormant volcano that could become active at any time. Hopefully it is one that will continue to splutter with entertainment and erupt with splendor at the optimal moment.

The members of the board in The Yotsuba Group also pose a mystery as members start being killed one-by-one. The new Kira sits among them, kills any who exhibit hesitation or opposition to the best interests of The Yotsuba Group. This could have been made more interesting by making any killings within the group a “Russian Roulette” situation. Perhaps more uncertainty surrounding the Yotsuba murders would have made it more exciting as a plot twist, rather than a quick side story. However, if it weren't for a relatively quick wrap-up of this side story those who have been following the series would not be able to see their original Kira back in action. I personally look forward to a return to the Light versus L days.

As the sands of time continue falling away, Death Note continues to chronicle the trials and tribulations of our favorite law enforcers. In Volume 6, L continues to amaze his colleagues with a small revelation following the realization that The Yotsuba Group has recruited a private investigator to unmask the sweet-toothed detective. Luckily, L's insiders keep them guessing while Misa unwittingly finds the new Kira.

With the attention directed away from Light due to the presence of the new Kira, Light's character is slightly less entertaining than usual for the first episode or so. Viewers should see a return of the teenage-genius-Light who is eager to help administer justice. His memories of his past as the greatest criminal Japan has ever seen are now just that. Nevertheless, his ability to slip into the criminal mind makes him a valued profiler as part of L's team and his special spot next to L stays warm throughout the episodes. Unbeknownst to himself and others, Light's alter ego who was temporarily relinquished during his incarceration still lingers beneath the surface.

Kishimoto's ninja-punk visual sensibilities serve the story well, allowing it to shift between cool, goofy, and menacing with ease. Distinctive clothing, hair, faces and personalities make it a snap to tell characters apart, and even the goofiest looking character (that'd be Lee) can become damn cool when the action starts. And action is where this title excels. The fights are staged with a clear eye for geography, movement and the human form, and are bursting with so much visual energy that not even the flashbacks and tedious explanations can dampen them. Kishimoto also has impeccable visual timing; he knows exactly when to emphasize a plot point or key moment in a fight with a 2/3 or 3/4 page spread, such as a close-up of Naruto's eyes or a chilling glimpse of Gaara's crazed, exposed face. The artwork is sometimes a little too crowded with detail, and his reliance on multiple small frames sometimes gives the fights a claustrophobic feel that doesn't suit their dynamic nature. He also uses a film-strip of reaction shots to punctuate key moments in fights so often that it soon becomes tedious (I counted 21 of them in three volumes).

Viz' presentation of Naruto is of their standard Shonen Jump quality. Binding, paper and print quality are all good, but not outstanding, and the Japanese sound effects are all completely replaced with English sound effects. Other than the "talk-back" sections at the end of each chapter, there are no extras included in these volumes.

Naruto enters its inevitable tournament section, but it's far from being dead space. Sure, the plot makes all the progress of a road-killed slug on a summer freeway, but there're enough little character moments and bone-crunching action to keep things moving throughout its (relatively) short three volume run. At the beginning of volume 10 Kishimoto claims that he hopes his readers never get bored while reading Naruto. He can rest assured; he has yet to fail on that front.

Actually, to be fair, Battle Girls is pretty decent as far as alternate-world anime goes. Particularly when you take into account that it's based off of a pachinko game. It's silly, moderately fun, and not without its mild points of interest—how Hideyoshi fits into the show's all-girl version of the Warring States Period not least among them. It helps that the show avoids romantic complications (and even if there were some, the cast is all-female. Go yuri!) and that Hideyoshi is such an unmitigated idiot. The tragic fates of its historic players (Oda and Mitsuhide, seen here as devoted friends, will eventually fall out, leading to Oda's death, after which Hideyoshi will kill Mitsuhide) ensure that the proceedings don't descend to the dippy depths of Koihime†Musō or this season's Dog Days, and the script even works in a bit of educational content. Yes, an item-gathering quest already looms on the horizon, and yes, the battles are incomprehensible, but at least the episode inspires a (slight) desire to see future ones.

The plot is virtually impossible to describe. And not just because it has none. It has something to do with the everyday ramblings of mildly insane high-schooler Yuka and her sensible best friend Mio. It includes their interactions with their class's deeply weird resident introvert and Mio's goat-riding wannabe-aristocrat crush. There's also a robot girl with a giant wind-up key sticking out of her back and limbs that detach too easily, plus her five-year-old creator. Pet abuse and town-demolishing explosions also enter into the picture.

My Ordinary Life trades primarily in strangeness. It has its meandering conversations about nothing and celebrations of meaningless cuteness, but they tend to be sandwiched between or riven by bizarre non-sequiturs. There's the random scene of quiet classmate Mai playing a dangerous combination of Frisbee and skeet with her dog. There's robot girl Nano discovering that her wind-up key is used to power her rocket toes. And most memorably, there's Yuka's epic pursuit of a really slippery octopus sausage...across desk, through mohawk, past baseball mitt, off of locker and onto floor. Much of it is senseless and even more of it flat-out unfunny, but enough moments combine WTF happenings with Kyoto Animation's over-the-top animation to create big laughs that it's worth sitting through the rest. For now.

While everything from its title to its animators and yonkoma origins suggests that My Ordinary Life will join K-ON! and Lucky Star in their quest to turn otaku brains into puddles of (sweet!) green goo, it has one quality that sets it apart from its precious moe peers: it's actually funny.

Do a little thought experiment: You're an employee at an inn and a sixteen-year-old girl moves in. She's obviously lonely and uncertain, though she tries to hide it. She's kind of self-centered and not terribly sensitive, but her heart seems to be in the right place. Do you A) Give her some encouragement; B) Goof around a bit because mushy stuff makes you uncomfortable; C) Befriend her; or D) Tell her to go die because you've got your own sh** to deal with and she's obviously a f***ing spoiled brat. Oh, and if you're the boss, there's also option E: Put her to work and beat her when her kindness inconveniences the guests. The series is obviously trying to provide a quiet, realistic alternative to the bawdy, hyperactive, alien-and-ninja school of teen anime, and that's very nice of it, but harshness isn't realism, and cruelty doesn't make your characters complex; it just makes them bad people. Still, the show is beautifully animated and scored, as well as refreshingly sensitive and serious-minded. Plus, there's little doubt that future episodes will have Ohana ferreting out the reasons why the innfolk behave as they do, which will hopefully mitigate future unpleasantness.

Hana-Saku Iroha is a picturesque coming-of-age tale in a Japanese inn, complete with soft emotions and hard lessons but missing anyone to really identify with. Ohana lives a fairly carefree life in the big city with her flighty mother. Until her mother's no-good boyfriend racks up some heavy debt and decides to flee, with her mother in tow. Ohana is sent to the countryside to live with her grandmother, who owns a traditional inn. Unfortunately for her, her grandmother turns out to be a hard old bat whose milk of kindness has long since dried up, leaving only iron-fisted discipline and total intolerance for weakness. She has no intention of treating the offspring of her disinherited daughter as her own blood, and promptly puts Ohana to work. Which wouldn't be too bad if her co-workers didn't either ignore, taunt or openly loathe her.

The abductee this time is an unfortunate slip of girl named (or more accurately, nicknamed) Hideyoshi. Hideyoshi attracts misfortune the way roadkill attracts buzzards. It's always circling, waiting to bite her in the rear when she's least expecting it. Mostly they're just nips: a crush of commuters on the bus that makes her late for school, a perceptive teacher who catches her when she tries sneaking into class late. But one day, while visiting a shrine to pray for good grades, she gets bitten bad. Really bad. Magical-accident-that-transports-you-to-the-past-where-you-become-Nobunaga-Oda's-flunky bad. Luckily Hideyoshi's a girl who can take things in stride... when she has any idea what's going on. Which isn't often.

The real mystery is where all of this time-travel hocus-pocus is leading. The series is so busy serving up murk and mystery that it fails to provide its plot with any clear direction. Presumably we'll have to tune into future episodes to get that, but aside from finding out if our deductions are right, there's little reason to. Hiroshi Hamasaki's direction is labored and humorless (this despite the inherent humor of having a wannabe mad scientist as a lead character), the visuals are oppressive, the air of paranoia and alienation that Nitroplus does so well has grown wearying, and we're given no compelling reason to care what happens to the characters. Give it a couple of episodes to sharpen some kind of hook and it could be pretty interesting. If not... well, there's always Serial Experiments Lain to watch again.

Don't tune into Steins;Gate if you want a good time. This is muddy, deliberately obtuse stuff whose primary purpose is to be mysterious and whose primary pleasure is puzzling out what is happening. The episode begins with Rintaro Okabe, a self-styled mad scientist, attending a talk on time travel. The lecture doesn't go well. Okarin, as he's known to his friends, makes a scene and is pulled from the room, after which he investigates a commotion upstairs and finds a girl he just met lying face-down in a pool of her own blood. Like any good citizen he bolts and texts his friend about the incident, whereupon everyone around him disappears. A moment of confusion later and everything's back to normal—except there's a fallen satellite in the building he just left and everyone thinks that the lecture was cancelled before he ever got there.

It's actually a fairly simple task to devise a sequence of events that explains most of this episode: Okarin's text leads to him discovering that his cell phone can text people in the past, allowing him to tinker with past events such that the lecture, and the murder, never happen. Since he did the tinkering, he remembers the original time-line while no one else does. The disappearing people are a symptom of the cosmic shift that happens when his action leads to an alteration of the past. Yay. Mystery solved.

Odd-jobs agencies are a long-time staple of anime, which can make it a little hard to get excited about another show starring a group of misfits fulfilling the silly requests of troubled folk. Unlike a great many of its peers, though, Sket Dance understands the core appeal of its premise: namely short, varied stories and colorful characters. This episode alone mixes comic action with surprisingly tricky sleuthing, adding in high-school drama and goofy character-based humor just for flavor. The Sket Club, for its part, supplies the cast with plenty of color, as well as surprising depth (for the extremity of their personalities, that is), and a good base-level of charm. It hurts nothing that the show is also refreshingly positive, particularly in the way the Sket members throw themselves heart and soul into their clients’ petty problems, or that there's a brain behind its fun-and-games facade. Compound that with solid production values and you have one of the better series of its stripe to come down the pike in some time.

Let's get this out of the way: Sket Dance has nothing to do with dance. What it does have to do with is a group of high-school troubleshooters called the Sket Club. Teppei Sugihara has just transferred to Kaimei Academy. He doesn't stand out much, being your average bespectacled wallflower, and doesn't much care to. Unfortunately for him, he immediately catches the eye of the Sket Club, a three-person solve-any-problem team that would really, really like to have a fourth member. They're massive weirdoes--exactly the kind of people that a guy looking to blend in should avoid. There's the hat-wearing, ruckus-loving club president "Bossun" Fujisaki, his main investigator "Switch" Usui, who speaks only through a voice synthesizer, and his strong right arm "Himeko" Onizuka, who just can't quite leave behind the yankee mannerisms of her youth. Teppei would rather not have anything to do with them, but when he's attacked by a masked, paint-throwing fiend he's got no one else to turn to.

After all that buildup and the climactic battle against the Witch of the Knoll, maybe it was time to dial down and return to more familiar material. That's probably the best explanation for why this volume of Rosario+Vampire regresses to old, formulaic material instead of charging forward in a bold new story direction. Unfortunately, that's a disappointment for those who didn't like the old, formulaic stuff in the first place. Who cares about awkward stalker girls with ice powers when there's all sorts of intrigue to be had with the vampirism hidden within Tsukune? This volume is, at best, a transition between one major story arc and the next, filling in the spaces with lightweight romantic entanglements. Worse yet, it doesn't even squeeze in enough fanservice. Although billed as a horror-tinged romantic comedy, it's pretty clear what genre Rosario+Vampire really wants to go into. So it should hurry up and start heading there.

Japan Expo 11th Impact Brings Out in the Open Its Manga Guest of Honor: Tsukasa Hôjô

The suspense is over! Japan Expo 11th Impact has the privilege to receive Tsukasa Hojo as its Manga Guest of Honor this year!

A great name of Japanese Manga, Tsukasa Hojo is the author of masterpieces such as Cat's Eye and City Hunter. He was born on March 5th, 1959, in Kokura, Fukuoka Prefecture. He ended second of the Tezuka Prize in 1979 with Space Angel. In 1980, exactly thirty years ago, he started as a professional Mangaka as he published Ore wa otoko da ! (I am a man!) in the magazine Weekly Shônen Jump.

In 1981 he started Cat's Eye, showing his talent for drawing women, and became very active in the magazines published by Shueisha, and especially Weekly Shônen Jump. City Hunter began in 1985. It is Tsukasa Hojo's second great success, after Cat's Eye, and the one that made him famous all over the world. He is successful not only in Japan but also in France where the animation adaptations, Cat's Eye and Nicky Larson, got very popular as soon as they started to be broadcast.

Later Tsukasa Hojo created the magazine Weekly Comic Punch (published by Shinchôsha–Coamix) in which he has been publishing a new series, Angel Heart, which goes on since then.

Tsukasa Hojo celebrates this year the 30th anniversary of his carrier, as well as the 25th anniversary of City Hunter ! He is also the Manga Guest of Honor of Japan Expo 11th Impact which promises to be as exceptional as this first guest!

The artistry that was one of the Heian Arc's highlights has also undergone a substantial change. Gone is the long, flowing hair and sumptuous period costumes which made the lush character designs of earlier episodes so appealing. Although features and build have been carried over more or less intact, hair and clothing styles are decidedly modern. Logical updates were used; Sadamitsu dresses like a pretty-boy biker, for instance, Mansairaku wears a trench coat, and Tsuna has a hunky athletic look complete with a bit of a goatee. Hikaru has traded in her highly traditional woman's dress for the common fare of a modern teenage girl and has no need in the modern era to dress like a man. (And, thankfully, they have not yet shown her in a school uniform.) When drawn right, the main cast still looks quite appealing, but unfortunately that isn't always the case. Body proportioning is inconsistent in episodes 14-17 and in the opener, resulting in scenes where some of the characters look distorted compared to the norm for their appearance. Discrepancies are keyed to changes in clothing or the angle at which the character is seen, especially in Hikaru's case; she often looks much broader and shorter in the torso when wearing something which covers her shoulders, for instance, and how thick she looks in the hips depends a lot on whether she's wearing a skirt or jeans. These effects have subsided by episode 18, though they remain in the opener. Minor characters are much less remarkable, although many are clearly patterned off of secondary characters from the Heian Arc.

While some problems do exist in the character designs, the background artistry is a significant improvement from the Heian Arc. Almost everything is better-drawn, better-detailed, and fits better with the character art. Color schemes are generally lighter but also more faded than what was seen earlier. The animation fares well; characters sometimes look a little awkward when running, but movements are otherwise smooth and animation shortcuts are minimal. Overall it is still a good-looking series, though not in the same way that it was in earlier volumes.

Updating the story and artistry also required updating the soundtrack. Background music has dispensed with the flute melodies and Noh dance rhythms used in the Heian Arc in favor of more modern themes, resulting in an entirely different sound. The new closer, which is also set to sketches (albeit much cruder than those used in the Heian Arc closer), uses a different song but has a similar tone, while the new opener is entirely different. Gone is the hard-edged, dynamic opener of Attack Haus, and replacing it is a more jaunty, laid-back guitar-based number by a guy calling himself Gomez The Hitman. The dramatic opening visuals have also been changed for images that include various characters lip-synching to some of the lyrics. The English dub casting remains the same, however, and actually has improved a bit since there is no longer a need for Julie Ann Taylor, Hikaru's VA, to use a raspy voice to imitate being a man. She does not put the petulant touch into her performance that the seiyuu for Hikaru did, but such a tone does not feel right for the character and her vocal quality fits the role at least as well. Other key English VA performances are close enough in style to the originals, and suitable enough in vocal quality for the character, to be fine for their roles.

Otogi Zoshi has been amongst the richest of series when it comes to extras, a tradition continued in its fourth volume. As before, the extras are all on a separate disk included inside normal-size packaging, and most of the extras are of the same type as those seen in previous volumes. The two Group Discussion pieces (#5 and #6) this time feature the director, sound director, chief writer, and a Production I.G PR/Advertising rep talking about issues ranging from character commentary to sound issues to a discussion about how the Tokyo Arc came to be structured the way it was; it is especially interesting to note from these that production time factors helped shaped the story the way it is, and how the story was set in Tokyo primarily because a contrast between the “old capital” (Kyoto, aka Heian-Kyo) and the “new capital” (Edo/Tokyo) was desired. The University Lectures feature a different professor from Tokyo University but otherwise continue the tradition of explaining and commenting on various locations and historical issues which come up in each episode. Also included is a music video for the opener, which uses clips from the animation. All totaled there are nearly 80 minutes of extras present not counting the company trailers. Add on the presence of five episodes, 2.0 and 5.1 tracks for both the English and Japanese dubs, and a separate subtitling option and you have a great value for a normally-priced DVD.

In turning a period action series into a modern-day supernatural mystery/drama the creators of Otogi Zoshi have made an incredibly bold move. Whether or not this will ultimately prove to be a successful gimmick remains to be seen, and there are some niggling inconsistencies in the character renderings to be worked out, but it is certainly not something you ordinarily see in anime. “Modern History” deserves a look by anyone who has followed the series so far and hopefully will be enough to attract the attention of some who might have ignored the series before. The story of Hikaru, it seems, has a ways to go yet.

The title of this three volume boy's love (BL) manga Menkui, which means “shallow” or “a sucker for a pretty face,” is supposed to refer to the defining character flaw of the manga's protagonist Kotori. But in actuality, Kotori is much too ordinary and too unmemorable a hero or lover to be the embodiment of an untranslated Japanese word of this sort. Better—or should I say worse?—to say that Suzuki Tanaka's first multi-part series itself is “Menkui,” a manga of appalling stunted scope and pinched ambitions.

The burgeoning relationship between Kotori and Akaiwa has got to be one of the more epic exercises in frustration available in English translated BL manga—both for the couple themselves and the soon to be disappointed reader. The subplots stumble half-heartedly through every “Why doesn't he say he loves me?” and “How come he's so friendly with them but not with me?” plotline in the BL cliché playbook, and when even those wear too thin Tanaka switches gears abruptly to improbable science fiction/fantasy setups. The one that dominates volume two involves a lonely, Heian period ghost trapped in the school's bathroom mirror who wants Kotori to join him on “the other side” forever—and, yes, it is just as dumb as it sounds. Perhaps even more so. Volume three concludes this tale of misfired romance with body-switching across parallel universes. Really…and no, don't ask.

The second, on the other hand, titled “Muddy Stream,” is a frightening, affective tale of claustrophobia, domestic violence, and the failure to free oneself. A boy living in a walled off city whose father beats him bloody meets a violent but independent older boy who is determined to escape to the outside. When the time comes and they approach the proverbial city gates, the abused boy finds himself unable to take that first step into freedom. Needless to say, its quality is so above and beyond anything that has appeared in the previous chapters of the three volumes that, were it not for the recognizable art style, you would think that the mangaka was a different person altogether. If this is what she can do, it truly is a shame that it takes her this long to show off her writing chops. “Muddy Stream” is almost worth the $9.99 cover price all by itself; everything else that came before, by comparison, represents abject creative failure.

Tanaka's artwork is perhaps her greatest asset when her storytelling capabilities are—as they often are—refusing to come to her rescue. She has a clean yet distinctively bold, confident style that has won her numerous fujoshi devotees. In some ways, it looks rather anime-like or perhaps Shounen Sunday-esque. She might have been a slice of life shounen mangaka in another life. Indeed, one wonders if she might not be wasting her time in BL. But for better or for worse, Tanaka continues to publish new BL, more in the style of Menkui than not, with popular Japanese periodicals to this day.

While volume 6's episodes establish the circumstances for the finale, volume 7's episodes bring everything and everyone together into the expected sequence of climatic battles – and yes, Arika and Nina do eventually get around to duking it out again, too, but so does everyone else. So much effort is put into getting everyone involved (including even Miss Maria, who reveals that she has lost nothing with age) and using the traditional “you go on while I take care of this” approach that these episodes ultimately lose a bit of their edge. Still, they execute enough key moments, and carry them through well enough, that the content succeeds overall.

And it's the key moments, moreso than anything else, which make the series what it has become in its second half. In volume 6, these moments include Arika and Sergey finally confronting each other and confessing the feelings they harbored before everything went south, Mashiro finally stepping up and trying to be a proper leader, and the long-awaited appearance of the Fire-Stirring Ruby, aka Mai, the heroine of My-HiME. (For those who have not seen the predecessor series, the goings-on in episode 23 involving Mai and Mikoto mark the point in this series where not having seen the previous one will be most detrimental. For those who have seen the original series, whatever expectations you might have had about how Mai's appearance would play out, episode 23 will probably surprise you.) In volume 7, these moments include Arika's fateful meeting with her mother (so to speak) and two scenes involving Nina and Sergey: one where she finally confesses her feelings to him, and the other the poignant resolution of their situations in the very last scene. For all the flaws the series may have, that it can achieve that kind of ending proves its merits.

Of course, My-Otome still fully exploits its flashy fight scenes and displays of power, but skillful choreography and usually respectable combat animation keeps them from getting old or dull. The series also deserves major kudos for keeping the Otome transformation scenes short, lively, and interesting. For as weighty as the content sometimes gets, it never entirely loses its sense of humor, either. Regrettably the artistic quality never improves through these episodes, with the not-completely-refined look that has plagued the series and occasional breakdowns in artistry and animation lingering nearly to the end. Volume 7 does, however, offer significant fan service.

Unlike the visuals, the musical score is at its finest. Its mix of dramatic upbeat numbers liberally infused with wordless vocals and variations on the recurrent haunting lullaby perfectly support and promote the energy and melodrama through these episodes, which heightens the overall strength of the work. The content would have nowhere near the impact or enthusiasm that it does without this terrific effort. The second closer and original opener persist through episode 25, with episode 26 lacking an opener and featuring a closer set to epilogue scenes.

The English dub through volume 6 benefits greatly from most of the weakest roles simply not being present, while the one formerly weak performance that does remain (Mashiro) has improved enough to no longer be an issue. Other performers handle their respective material at least adequately well. The original English voice of Mikoto does return for an encore, and while the English voice of Mai is, curiously, not credited, it does sound like the original performer, too. Even when some of the weaker roles pop back up again in volume 7, the dub still manages to tread water by relying on strong performances in key roles, especially newcomer Tracy Sutton as Tomoe.

As with earlier volumes, each of these two has an omake for an Extra. Volume 6's “The Legend of the Fire-Stirring Ruby” explains in better detail how Mai's circumstances came to be, and only reinforces the impression given about her by episode 23; let's just say that she does not cut the tragically conflicted figure that the story had, to this point, made her out to be. Volume 7's “My-Otome vs. My-HiME” provides a comical wrap-up to the two series which focuses on whether Mai or Arika was better as the star and who should be the lead in the next franchise project (i.e. My-Otome Zwei). Volume 7 also includes a creditless version of the final episode's closer.

If you judge an anime's merits on rewatchability then these volumes should score pretty high. Those who toughed it out through the weak early stages of the series should find plenty of satisfying fun, and those hoping for a better ending the original series should find this one more to their liking.

The submarine procured from the three brothers gets put to occasional good use – when not being stolen back by the brothers and their sister May, that is. Further trouble arises when Maia's mission to recover a runaway boy dredges up a past connection for Rena and inadvertently gets two Nereids branches deeply involved in a terrorist attack designed to crash a plane Maia is on. Later, a seemingly abandoned baby causes complications for Yu, while association with a con man causes problems for Shizuka. Although Maia continues her dedication to testing into the Ocean Agency throughout, the gradual resurfacing of her long-forgotten memories eventually creates a distraction so great that it interferes with her work for Nereids, too. As Maia comes to realize that everything she was told about her past was a lie, the ramifications run deep, for her truth is connected to long-buried secrets that some never want to see resurface. In the mystery of Daphne, some of the greatest hidden truths under the Brilliant Blue can be found.

In a pair of bonus episodes, some of the girls engage in a friendly hovercraft race, while an encounter with an old vending machine has a dramatic effect on Maia and Gloria.

Since its earliest scenes the trademark of Daphne has been costuming so skimpy that it might make a Vegas showgirl blush, and the second half of the series does nothing to change that. By this point, however, most viewers should be so inured to the near-overexposure that it no longer registers as prominently, thus allowing concentration on the rest of the series' content. In some senses that is a Bad Thing, as the lessening of such a distraction allows viewers to realize how much the series is merely retreading stale one-shot story ideas without doing much to freshen them up. In other senses that is a Good Thing, though. For all the faults that the series has, it can be genuinely entertaining once one gets past the whole costuming thing, and that shows through a bit better in the second half than in the first.

Any listing of the story elements used through this run shows a decided lack of creativity. A fish-out-of-water story about taking care of a baby? Humoring an old kook on an underwater hunt for a sea monster? A heroine having to land a commuter plane under distressed conditions? A case of amnesia hiding a dire secret? A seemingly benevolent organization with something to cover up? A character getting charmed by a con man? Chasing down a runaway kid? Yawn. All of these are “been there, done that” material from other anime series, in some cases many times over; the amnesia gimmick, which was dropped on viewers out of the blue toward the end of the first half, is particularly guilty of this. Not helping matters is the lack of depth the series shows on any character other than Maia, as what little true glimpses viewers get into the backstories of other characters barely fleshes them out at all. (That Rena once rejected a guy in a way that took him ages to get over is hardly a shocking revelation.)

What the series does do well, however, is to find a way to make things entertaining despite how moldy its ideas are. The characters may be fairly basic archetypes, but they are used effectively to generate a lot of spirited content, some of which even becomes outright funny; somehow, Yu's deadpan contrast to Gloria, and the way she regularly beats Gloria into submission whenever the latter goes too far out of control, never gets old, nor does the way Rena flaunts her sexuality when off-duty. Maintaining the three brothers and sister May as recurring characters is one of the few places where the series shows inspiration, as they serve well in the way they mix comic relief with crises and never disappoint on any of their appearances. Maia also has her turns as the comic fall girl.

Perhaps most surprising is that the series actually successfully pulls off turning serious for the exploration of Maia's true past, although it does dillydally around until episode 19 before fully devoting itself to that close-out arc. The direction it goes in should not be entirely unexpected by veteran anime fans, but in exploring what was being hidden, and the reasons why it was being hidden, the lost-memory arc gives the series what little meat it actually has and a vague sense of drama. In bringing Maia to a sense of completion it also, in a sense, brings the entire setting to a sense of completion, in the process finally explaining the series' curious name and what the deal is with the mysterious guy in sunglasses who has occasionally popped up in the vicinity of Maia since the first episode.

The artistry and animation are also nothing special. Character designs provide a good variety of physical types for the girls, including a strong, simple charm for Mizuno, although aside from the one episode where Kanako uses her manba look (i.e. a very distinctive combination of make-up, tanning, and hair coloring little-seen in the West beyond anime conventions – see this link for examples), only Nagi's design deviates at all from standard harem archetypes. Cats tend to get more cartoonish looks, although AIC did at least make an effort to cover a wide variety of cat looks. Character rendering quality is very ordinary, too, with a heavy dependence on superdeformed looks for comedy bits. The animation quality strongly suggests limited time and budget.

On the plus side, the musical score does everything it can to enhance the comedic mood of the series and is fairly effective at it, with a good sense of timing and a deft touch evident throughout the humorous bits. It is bland elsewhere, however. Opener “Nyandaful” is suitably light, cheery, and energetic, while closer “Strawberry ~Amaku Setsunai Namida~” is a yawner.

Ryuki has finally started to act like a sensible ruler, but Shurei has little opportunity to enjoy it. Plots against Ryuki are still afoot, ones which involve Shurei with poisonings, kidnappings, and assassins, and Ryuki is determined to keep Shurei safe as those around him manipulate events to their own ends. When the time comes for Shurei to leave the Royal Court and go home, Ryuki reveals his true interests and initially tries to win Shurei's heart with outlandish gifts, but ultimately he decides to appeal to her by giving her what she wants most: an opportunity to take the National Exams. The artwork, produced by Studio BONES, uses a bright and varied palette of colors for character animation and foreground art against finely-detailed but more subdued backgrounds. This frequently results in imperfect integration between character and background art, a problem which is a little more prominent in this volume than it was in the first volume. Distance shots of some characters in some scenes also look very rough. Close-ups of characters are well-detailed and pleasingly designed, though, with well-conceived costuming that favors prominent shoulder pieces and high, stiff collars. The costuming, which uses a mixture of medieval European and high fantasy styles, is distinctive and practical enough that the outfits for some characters would be excellent for cosplay. (Shannon and Raquel would work especially well and, I imagine, would be relatively easy to do.) The animation, which avoids use of most common anime shortcuts, continues to support the artistry and storytelling quite well. The excellent opener and closer remain unchanged.

Bandai Visual had already revealed the existence and premiere date (January 22, 2011) of this prison escape story in September.

Bubblegum Crash is the conclusion to the Bubblegum Crisis series. Crisis was incomplete at eight (out of a supposed thirteen) episodes, and Crash is supposed to be a rough equivalent to the remaining five episodes. Mega Tokyo is a very different place in 2034 than it was in 2032. It's basically a nice place to live; boomer crime--in fact, all crime--is down, the standard of living is up, and it's safe to walk the streets at night. Genom isn't around anymore, and there seems to be much less need for a band of armored vigilantes. The girls also have personal reasons for putting away their armor; is this the end of the Knight Sabers?

The Nico Nico Live Hōsō program has announced on Friday that production on an Blessing of the Campanella OAV (original video anime) has been green-lit. (The program is available after the live streaming to Nico Nico Douga premium subscribers.) Director Shinji Ushiro and voice actress Asami Imai (Chelsea) were special guests of Friday's Nico Nico Live Hōsō program. The 12th and final television episode aired earlier this month.

With Mister's fists and bullets doing most of the talking, this volume doesn't offer much high-level dialogue. In fact, it even resorts to quips straight out of Stallone or Schwarzenegger: "Don't you smell something bad?" "What smell?" "The smell of trouble." The narrations at the beginning of each chapter are also hopelessly clunky, but aside from that, the translated dialogue is adequate, bringing across the feel of a typical action-adventure piece. Japanese sound effects are left in place, with translations next to them that match the font but stay small enough to keep out of the artwork's way. A brief notes section in the back proves to be nearly useless (does anyone really need an explanation of what a Criminal Guild is?) but the glossy color page in the front adds some attractive bonus art.

There may not be any ragtime in the Coyote Ragtime Show, and the only appearance of coyotes is in metaphorical terms, but what the series does have is plenty of fist-swinging, bullet-dodging, spacecraft-piloting action. The first volume accomplishes exactly what it sets out to achieve: an introduction to a wild, dangerous world where a noble tough guy sets out to live life on his own terms—which somehow involves a lot of running and explosions. Anything beyond that is beyond the series' scope: no fancy moral dilemmas on life and death, no conspiracy plots to untangle or deep mysteries to solve, no dramatic upheaval or emotionally troubled characters. For some folks, it'll be satisfying enough just to see a grizzled hero on the run, seeking out treasure and protecting the girl. For those more familiar with the genre, however, this is going to feel like something's lacking.

Like the two previous Precure All-Stars DX magical girl films, the new film will combine the casts of all the Pretty Cure (Precure) television series to date. The one thing that Tactics does consistently do right is its artistry. Kantaro and Haruka have classic bishonen looks, while Suzu and Yoko are more typically cute for their ages, but all are drawn and costumed well, as are the recurring and supporting characters in each episode. (Though Reiko's clothing seems grossly inconsistent with the setting, which looks to be early 20th century.) Backgrounds are also nicely drawn and detailed. Full-sized demons and monsters look more ordinary, while the weird little “kid” monsters are the kinds of simple, cutesy designs you'd expect from a series for kids. Colors are sharp but not over-bright. The animation takes too many shortcuts to be given any praise, however, which results in action scenes that lack energy and fluidity.

The musical score is also not free of problems. Though it generally does its job, someone made the unwise decision to highlight the Shinto chant scenes with a musical selection ripped off from the original incarnation of “Charlie's Angels,” which will sound laughably corny to anyone old enough to remember watching “Charlie's Angels.” At least a smarter choice was made with the opener and closer, with the J-Rock tunes “Secret World” and “Unseen Power” providing a lively start-up and close-out to each episode.

Interestingly enough, in the interview with Tomizawa at the end of the book, he mentions that he wanted readers to be able to still use their imaginations while reading the manga. He didn't want to paint the scenes too explicitly or all the reader creativity would be taken out. While this explains why the manga panels are so sparse during the action scenes, it still doesn't give any validation to the difficulty in following the story. After all, no matter how creative a reader may be, he or she still won't be able to follow the story if there are no set guidelines.

To credit Tomizawa, though, the artwork in Alien Nine is most definitely unique. With the grotesque atmosphere permeating the entire story, it's no surprise that the artwork is just as monstrous. Scenes of limb severation, mutilation, and death are not uncommon, dashing any hopes that the story could just be a cute junior high school girl adventure. In this case, the interview also comes in handy, as the author explains his motivations for the gore. Wishing to show the aliens as animalistic, he allowed their actions to show them as beings free from complex logic.

Sailor Moon fans, the nostalgia that has always accompanied those “good old days” of watching Sailor Moon on TV is now obtainable whenever you want it. The original Sailor Moon television series is available on DVD, dubbed and edited as it was for its first US television release. Released by ADV Films, the first disc includes the first six episodes, with no extras to back them up besides ADV trailers, but with so many episodes at a low price, it makes it worthwhile. The only problem with the disc is the formatting of its content. It's a shame that ADV is releasing the original series as the television version that appeared in the United States. Hardcore Sailor Moon fans will have to wait another few months for a chance to see the series in its original Japanese dialogue and unedited form. But with such a long series, Sailor Moon fans will be hard-pressed for their money if they plan on collecting all of it.

By watching the series again from the beginning, one can see why it gained so much popularity. The series is comical at times, and though the plot is painfully repetitive, whenever new characters are introduced, the viewer has the tendency to feel anxious whenever the scouts are in danger. This feeling of compassion for the characters drives the series, and makes it bearable to watch the same sequences over and over again just for a brief moment of character interaction. Also, even though the storylines of the episodes get excruciatingly repetitive and boring to watch, there is some tiny pleasure derived from seeing how many different ways there are to gather energy from humans (surprisingly a whole series-full). On the downside, watching the series from the beginning allows one to question the positive aspects of the show and its overhanging negative bits. Even in just the first six episodes, there are plot holes galore, and scenes that are blatantly illogical in the way the scenes were animated. The series introduces the Sailor Moon concept, as well as the various attacks much too quickly. With virtually no explanation, the viewer is lunged into an episode that is in no way discernible from one midway through the series. As for the points of illogicalness, the first episode shows Serena as a bumbling idiot, but when asked to transform or attack, she launches into an overly-confident Sailor Moon. This is highly inconsistent with basic human nature and development, and makes the series more apt to ridicule.

Whatever Sailor Moon is known for, it is definitely not the art, nor the animation, both of which falter in quality. The art is inconsistent and has overly simplistic, yet somehow cluttered backgrounds and characters. To explain this, the art is very simplistic in its shading and lack of detail, which to be sure is a fault of the animation, and not the original manga from which the series is based. Yet, the lines that are used in the art clutter the screen, as there are a variety of extraneous lines, such as in the backgrounds or the characters' faces. The animation is also sub par, with very choppy movements, as well as jerky camera panning. To make it worse, every single episode carries the same exact transformation and battle sequences, making it exasperating to watch more than two episodes in a row. Granted, being a magical girl series means that there will be overused transformation sequences, but at the very least, the animators could have varied the backgrounds at once every four episodes. As it is, the only things that make the episodes discernable from each other are the individual story lines and the new characters used.

For the first time at Japan Expo, a famous Japanese composer of video game music has pride of place. This year, come and meet Noriyuki Iwadare, the author of the unforgettable music of the games Lunar, Grandia and Phoenix Wright!

A self-taught composer, Noriyuki Iwadare starts very soon writing video game music and it became his main activity to this day. As soon as the early 90s the music of the game Lunar The Silver Star drew attention to him and many compositions followed until his greatest worldwide success: the Grandia series, the last episode of which, Grandia Online, has just been released in Japan! He went on with more and more projects, tackling other fields such as TV, musicals, radio… He also composed for the festival Yosakoi Sôran in Tôkyô Disney Resort.

In 2008 Noriyuki Iwadare rearranged the whole of his work for the album Gyakuten Saiban Orchestra Concert ˜Gyakuten Meets Orchestra˜ («Phoenix Wright») with the Tôkyô Philharmonic Orchestra and took part in the prestigious Press Start Symphony of Games, a series of video game music orchestral concerts, with the greatest composers of the industry.

After several chapters of up-and-down moments, Karakuri Odette seems to have finally found its groove, centering on the storyline everyone was hoping for all along: adorable android girl learns the meaning of love. This volume opens with something less ambitious, though: a stand-alone chapter where Odette and Chris try to recover a missing cat. It's a very typical story for the series, showing how Odette's good intentions get derailed by other human factors she didn't take into account. Even the second chapter, where the romantic stuff actually starts happening, could easily be taken as another formulaic incident where Odette misunderstands an odd human custom (in this case, the classroom superstition of writing your crush's name on an eraser). String all the middle chapters together, however, and an elegant story arc takes shape: one where Odette starts to feel emotions such as jealousy and longing, where her friends begin to engage in a back-and-forth love polygon, and where even Odette's physical attributes are affected by these emotional changes. Of course, the science of how Odette is able to feel such things is conveniently skipped over, but such technological hand-wringing would add little to the story anyway.

Even the most trivial scenarios in this volume find ways to illuminate the gap between artificiality and humanity: the last chapter, which is about (manga cliché alert) a trip to the amusement park, dishes out another valuable life lesson when Odette has to deal with a very tired and cranky Asao. Funny how even unlikable characters end up being catalysts for the series' most charming moments—take Mika, for example, who up to this point has been nothing but a dispenser of verbal abuse towards Yukimura. But one little incident and and one line from Odette is all it takes to make Mika a sympathetic character in one of the most endearing twists in the series (although a rather predictable twist, for those who can read the signs).

The understated artistic style is also a key to Karakuri Odette's success; the visual language shows exactly what needs to be shown rather than try to overwhelm the eye with pointless ornamentation. If there are any concessions to typical shoujo convention, it might be in the screentoned patterns, or the many plain, backgroundless panels; meanwhile, others might complain about the similiarity of certain character designs—Mika and Yoko both have long dark hair, while Chris and Asao win the lookalike contest in the boys' department. All right, so maybe Suzuki isn't quite as accomplished as other artists when it comes to sheer variety and flair. Still, she has the capacity for visual flourishes like Odette comically running away from Yukimura whenever he approaches her. And few can match Suzuki's natural sense of layout: there is almost a rhythm in the way each panel comes after the next, clearly the skills of an artist who understands good visual pacing.

The way the dialogue is spaced out also contributes to that rhythm, with typically just one or two lines of text per panel. Don't expect the paragraphs (or worse yet, sentence fragments) of wild emoting that usually accompany a high school romance. Odette speaks; her friend replies; Odette speaks again; another reply; Odette thinks, then speaks, and so on—this style of speech hits a perfect balance between too quiet and too talkative, and the natural-sounding translation helps a lot too. It's a shame, though, that many of the the sound effects go untranslated: they often add to the ambience of a scene, and only translating the sounds when they matter to the plot comes off as lazy. At least the bonus strips in the back help to finish the volume on a humorous note.

Those who have been following Karakuri Odette since the beginning know that there have been ups and downs: some chapters just didn't fit with the tone of the series, like attempted robot assassinations and kidnappings and rescue missions. Volume 3, on the other hand, is the first to really dig into what the story does best: exploring the scope of human emotion from an android's point of view. (Well, the first two volumes did this as well, but they kept getting sidetracked.) Odette's fumblings toward a better understanding of "like" and "love" are a delight to read, and the storytelling is subtle enough to keep it from entering generic high school romance territory. Some of the day-to-day events are just typical android-meets-human stuff—come on, anyone can track down a lost cat—but as Odette begins to connect on a deeper level with her friends, that's where the story truly shines. Not just exploring the realms of the human and robot mind, but also the realm of the heart.

The characters are excessively emotive, and this is a serious problem for a show that's supposed to be fairly quiet and understated when there aren't hot emotions on display. The lead character overacts nearly 90 percent of the time. They've changed a lot of the dialogue to sound more natural, and it probably would sound natural if the actor delivering said dialogue wasn't so over-the-top. The female cast is pretty good, which is nice for a change. They manage to stay away from the all-English-anime-girls-sound-alike pitfall.

The plot is firmly established in these first 5 episodes, and if you like what you see, the series doesn't completely derail down the road. The DVD has a number of extras on it and the video presentation is crystal-clear; the music is pretty limp-sounding, but that's the composer's fault. Bascially, if you're looking for a science-fiction series that sidesteps the cookie-cutter tendencies of most other genre series, Infinie Ryvius is a can't-miss. People who find themselves bored by the genre, though, might be better off going elsewhere.

Despite varying levels of enthusiasm towards the proposition from the masters, Kenichi soon finds himself as the dojo's one and only disciple, which forces upon him grueling training but does ultimately teach him a thing or two about defending himself. Although Kenichi ultimately seeks only to protect himself and others, an initial success in using what he's been newly taught only leads to an escalating series of fights as local gang Ragnarok tries repeatedly to either take him out or forcibly “recruit” him.

Turn one master into six (of various different types of martial arts rather than just karate), make the hot girlfriend a martial arts master, too, and drop the surrogate parent/child relationship formed between master and student and you essentially also have the premise of KenIchi the Mightiest Disciple. In fact, the only other major difference, premise-wise, between the two is that KtMD takes itself far less seriously. It is a crucial difference, too, because much of what goes on in the series is entirely too ridiculous to be taken seriously.

Not all of it is ridiculous, though. The lessons Kenichi learns from the masters, and the fights that he has with various bullies and Ragnarok members, do delve into some of the specifics of how certain martial arts moves work and their tactical applications in certain situations and against certain kinds of enemies, such as how Kenichi is taught to take advantage of someone who favors sports karate in a fight by attacking that person in a way that sports karate enthusiasts are not used to countering. The series also focus on some of the minutiae of martial arts basics that too often get overlooked in many martial arts-related anime, such as the importance of footwork and balance in any kind of maneuver. Emphasizing that martial arts are no different than any other weapon when it comes to the morality of using them, and that learning how to fight can actually create as many problems as it solves, are additional nice touches, as is not making Kenichi out to be some kind of prodigy and showing that he does what he is out of necessity and an earnest desire to protect rather than the Naruto-like burning obsession to become the best.

Get beyond those points and one substory about a bad guy and his former boxing career and the series is awash in silliness. The superhuman skills and training regimens of the masters are over-the-top to the point of self-parody, such as the seeming torture devices designed to “loosen up” Kenichi or the especially harsh endurance training. The masters themselves are playfully presented archetypes with one or two defining characteristics each, such as Appachi's childish enthusiasm and total inability to show restraint, Shigure's soft-voiced approach and habit of hanging out in weird places, Shio's tough-guy routine, Akisame's pragmatism and bizarrely unconventional training methods, Kensei's money-grubbing lechery, and Hayato's seemingly gleeful habit of playing up his intimidation factor. The evil looks they take on when contemplating harsh training methods for Kenichi is always amusing, as is Kenichi's father's wrangling with his beloved gun Sebastien. Less welcome is the smarmy, alien-looking Tochumaru and Kenichi's early behavior, as his cowardice is overplayed to the point of annoyance. He gradually becomes more likeable as the series progresses, however.

The fan service element is embodied in Miu (and, to a much lesser extent, Shigure), whose character design gives her very generous curves and a tight-fitting fighting outfit in which to show them off. She arguably looks more appealing when not flaunting her figure, however, and it is to the series' credit that the writers found a satisfying balance of cheery sweetness and toughness in her. This kind of character can – and has – been done so much worse elsewhere.

TMS Entertainment, a Japanese company probably best-known to American fans for its production of the Lupin III and Detective Conan/Case Closed franchises, provides the artistry and animation for this one. It is a generally attractive effort, with each character getting his or her own highly distinctive look, although it does suffer from occasional minor quality control lapses and does not always seem to know how to properly and consistently draw the outline of Miu's breasts, especially in side shots. Many of the super-bulky supposed high school-aged fighters also look much, much too old, but this is hardly a problem limited to this series amongst fighting anime. Balancing that out is Miu's appealingly cheery face; based on face shots alone, she's one of the prettier anime heroines out there. The animation handles the fights reasonably well by focusing on specific moves, although it also takes many of the typical series animation shortcuts.

Music director Joe Rinoue has little other soundtrack production experience in anime, but he establishes some solid credentials with this effort. It is lively, highly adaptive, and varied, rarely missing the mark whether enhancing funny, dramatic, or action scenes. The adult contemporary-styled closer “Kimi Ga Irukara” may fail to impress, but upbeat opener “Be Strong” captures all of the energetic and enthusiastic spirit of the series, getting each episode off to a rockin' start.

Funimation's English dub is no slouch, either. English dubs of anime are often at their best when their actors get to ham it up, and this one offers plenty of succulent pork. The casting is rock-solid, too; Carrie Savage is exactly the right pick for Miu, Sonny Strait is delightfully giddy as Appachi, and Josh Grelle does a fine job in the anchor role of Kenichi. Many of Funimation's other regular male VAs also get their opportunities to have a little fun. If there is a flaw in the English dub, it's that the script sometimes goes a little too far with rewording things, but it flows well enough that this is not a big issue.

Set two months after the original series, the first episode spends its time concentrating on a Mithril strike force extricating itself from a mess in a Third World country embroiled in civil war, one which allows the series to show off its military hardware and emphasis on tactics. The meat of the story follows afterwards and primarily concerns Mithral's growing realization that another independent organization exists which runs counter to their purposes and has its own Black Technology. That such an organization exists shouldn't be any surprise, as it's long been a hard-fast rule in comic books that any organization operating for altruistic reasons must have one or more opposing organizations of approximately equal strength to offer them a suitable challenge. A total madman also usually figures into the equation, and in this TSR is not found lacking.

Despite a wholesale shift in staff and three-year gap between volumes, the only major change in Genshiken's look is the loss of season one's sharp character designs. Yoshiaki Yanagida's take on the characters is noticeably sloppier than Hirotaka Kinoshita's, simplifying some to the point of caricature (Kugayama) and leaving others decidedly potato-faced (Sasahara). The rooms, roads and conventions that house them, on the other hand, are as crisp and anally accurate as ever. The Genshiken clubroom in particular retains the comfortable aura of pop-culture decay that marked it in both of the series' previous incarnations. It's a junkyard for the detritus of the anime culture; both an endless source of tongue-in-cheek anime references (Gungal Bleed, indeed) and an exacting pastiche of real club rooms.

Given the static nature of the show, its animation isn't a draw or a drawback; it merely does what must be done, no more, no less. Static means no (or few) mistakes, no (or few) obvious shortcuts, and no (or few) chances to impress. Veteran hentai director Kinji Yoshimoto's background betrays itself in the occasional touch of unabashed fan-service and the aforementioned kiss scene, and his comic timing isn't as flawless as that of Takashi Ikehata (season one) or Tsutomu Mizushima (the OAV), but the series' subtle (and not-so-subtle) humor shines through regardless.

The humor has a harder time shining through Media Blasters' dub. The English script it far too faithful for its own good (though it has its occasional flights of humor-enhancing fancy), sticking close enough to the subtitle script to throw the series' subtle timing all off. It lacks the easy flow of the Japanese, as well as its quiet wit, and unfortunately the cast isn't good enough to compensate. Some, like Billy Regan's startlingly accurate Madarame, are excellent, but others—particularly the listless Michael Perreca in the pivotal role of Sasahara—are mediocre at best. Regardless of their raw skill, however, all of the actors are cast with impressive accuracy. At its very best—when the actors are in the groove and the script is cranking smoothly—the English version could almost be mistaken for the Japanese. At its worst, though, it is but a pale imitation.

Nothing exciting is happening in extras land. There's a short promo video and clean versions of both the opening and ending. The ending, in the usual Genshiken tradition, is a quiet acoustic number played over a slowly changing shot of the Genshiken club room, while the opening is a rousing—and drop-dead funny—lampooning of Gundam Seed. The two complement nicely the uncomfortably long stretches of silence, pleasant and varied (though sometimes odd) themes and occasional bursts of parody of Masaya Koike and Shun Okazaki's in-show music.

Watch the series for its easy character byplay. Watch it for its squirm-inducing humor. Watch it for its informative take on doujinshi publication and otaku culture in general. Or just watch to see Sasahara get mad (imagine an enraged bunny). Whatever the reason, watch it. This isn't just a comedy or a slice-of-life drama. Like the seminal Otaku no Video, it's an indispensible snapshot of the otaku zeitgeist, a chronicle for the ages of a time and a place that will eventually be no more.

The original Full Metal Panic! anime series was a mix of comedy, action, and dramatic elements, while the Fumoffu? follow-up opted instead to focus purely on the comedy elements of the premise. The first volume of The Second Raid takes the opposite approach, instead focusing primarily on the action component and, to a much lesser extent, the drama. With most of the light-hearted content confined to episode 2, it is a decidedly darker and more intense take on the core concept and cast of characters than either of the previous two series. It is also far more graphic, as this one has foul language, actual nudity, and much more intense graphic violence, including one scene (shown twice) where cutting a man's throat is depicted in great detail. The TV-14 rating the volume carries is too low.

The action fantasy revolves around a high school boy named Yumeji Fujiwara who has the mysterious power to see other people's dreams or nightmares. One day, he meets Merry, a beautiful girl who came from the world of dreams.

Or perhaps it's simply that it looks good. Certainly looking good has much to do with the sympathy the characters garner. Call me shallow, but it helps that characters like Soma Peries and Sumeragi look good enough to eat, with the extensive male cast serving as a substantial dessert (or vice versa depending on your preferences). Other places slick visuals help: in the creation of believable future settings (which are many, varied, and finely detailed), in capturing body language (which, despite the mild downgrade in animation quality, continues to be expressive), and in the liberal application of unadulterated robo-porn. Particularly the latter. The mechanical designs, all altered subtly in much the same manner as their pilots, are meticulous, suitably fetishized, and frequently pushed into feats of aeronautical violence that are really quite cool. Not an achievement to be sneezed at given the increased (increased; not prevalent) use of shortcuts and downgraded detail levels in the action scenes.

Kenji Kawai's score is not a subtle tool. It is big, spectacular, and even beautiful, but definitely not subtle. Keep an ear out for some eerie vocal work and the superior deployment of insert songs.

Bandai's dub isn't a huge draw. To be sure, it's professionally done (none of that outsourcing to Singapore that tanked a couple of their dubs some years back), but it's also seriously low-tension. You can lay most of that at the door of their subtitle-hugging script with its loving preservation of the original's cheese factor (for added fun, mentally replace any mention of "A-LAWS" with "in-laws"), but the actors must lay claim to a share of the blame as well. Too few of the roles are played with any energy, and when they are—as with Brent Miller's Smirnov—it's the wrong kind (goodbye soldierly formality, hello blustering Patton impersonation). There is good work throughout, for example Cathy Weseluck's hard-edged female commander Mannequin and basically anyone who did well in season one, but not enough of it. Saji's crisis of conscience, Soma's reaction to an inhuman A-LAWS tactic, Marie and Allelujah's reunion—any number of important developments lose crucial impact in the dub.

The Japanese broadcaster TBS began streaming the third promotional video for the anime adaptation of Yoshitaka Ushiki's Yumekui Merry manga on Saturday.

The action fantasy revolves around a high school boy named Yumeji Fujiwara who has the mysterious power to see other people's dreams or nightmares. One day, he meets Merry, a beautiful girl who came from the world of dreams.

The television anime will premiere in Japan on January 6, 2011.

If the naming of Episodes 5 and 6 seem like a hint of a more ambitious story structure—"Bravo on a Rainy Day" Parts I and II—don't get your hopes up. It's a euphemism for "we couldn't think of a good episode name for the next one," as Part I is basically a madcap hunt for amnesiac Koyomi, and Part II is an account of Miharu's return to Seiren. Episodes 7 and 8 are more of the same: a dire situation arises, Yukinari and company get into some scrapes, and everything works out in the end. It's an efficient use of the half-hour sitcom formula, but hardly original, and veterans of ecchi comedies will see the gags coming a mile away. Miharu wearing nothing but an apron? Come on, wasn't this on DearS? And in the find-a-husband episode, Miharu, Kirie and Koyomi get into tight outfits and strike provocative poses for gawking hordes of men. Why not just get to the beach or hot springs episode already?
